HOW TO MAKE DUMPLINGS – CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

To celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year, Meiyu threw a dumpling party for it’s students!

Last week, MeiYu organized a dumpling party for students to celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year. Students and teachers together made the dumplings and later devoured them !

Dumpling (jiaozi) is a traditional Chinese dish famous all around the world. Although eaten all year round it is a Chinese New Year staple.

Do you know why dumplings are always present during the Chinese New year? 

The first reason is because its shaped like ancient money. 

The second reason is the name, dumpling in Chinese is called 饺(jiǎo)子(zi), and it sounds like 交(jiāo)子(zǐ) which means the exchange of time between the new year and last year.

How to make dumplings?

The first step to throwing a successful dumpling party starts the day before with buying the ingredients and making the filling. Once you have all your ingredients, chop them in fine slices and mix them all up . Since most of our students are vegetarians we made vegetarian filling consisting of cabbage, garlic, ginger, carrots and shitake mushrooms.

On a big table set out the bowl of filling, the wrappers, a few spoons and bowls of water. To assemble the dumplings, add roughly 1 heaping tablespoon of filling to the center of a dumpling wrapper. With your finger, lightly coat half of the outside of the wrapper with water. Fold the moistened half of the wrapper over the filling and, using your fingers, pleat the edges to seal. Repeat with the remaining fillings and wrappers.

Put the dumplings into boiling water, and watch them boil, as soon as they start coming on the surface of the water means they are good to eat.

The beauty of the dumpling party is that it doesn’t have to be in distinct phases. You can just keep eating them while also making more.

Traditionally before Chinese New Year families get together and prepare dumplings similar to Gujiya preperation before Holi, this year although our teachers are far away from their family they had an equally amazing time preparing dumplings along with their students !
