Our Advise:
If you are someone who can invest 2-3 years of your life in learning mandarin chinese language full-time, we would advise you to take the entrance test of JNU, Delhi University or Viswa Bharti University. These places have well-established departments and they have collaborations with Chinese and Taiwanese governments and universities. So the exposure that you will get there will be huge, especially at JNU or DU. There is a good chance of getting a scholarship to study further in China or Taiwan which is very important while learning a foreign language.
If you are someone that is already enrolled in some other Bachelors or Masters course or are working and can’t join a university full time be wise in making your choice.
As far as part-time courses and other diploma courses are concerned unfortunately every month we come across many students who have completed a part-time advanced diploma in Chinese but their speaking and listening skills are equivalent to that of a beginner and therefore they are unable to communicate in mandarin Chinese language. While trying to find a job they are unable to clear the interview round with the Native Chinese HR, while conducting business they are unable to communicate with native people as a result, they need to study again with us from the beginner’ level. There is a lot of lament and frustration for wasting a year or more with no results in them.
The problem is not that diploma courses doesn’t have qualified teachers. Just that Chinese is a tone-based language and it is very important to get the tones right as a beginner or else the pronunciation will be wrong and the meaning of words will completely change. Check our detailed article on Why Chinese is considered difficult to learn here. When students study Chinese from a native speaker and are exposed to Mandarin constantly, they absorb the tones very naturally after repeatedly listening to them and speaking with them.
Generally, in India, the students who have done a bachelor or advanced diploma in Mandarin Chinese language from universities have HSK level 4 knowledge but the minus point can be that they lack exposure to Native Speakers. The focus tends to be more on reading and writing this student’s speaking and listening skills end up remaining at the beginner’s level. One must always remember that in a language if you are unable to speak, no amount of degree or certificate can help.
For being able to secure job opportunities in the market, it is mandatory for one to have HSK level 3 certificate or above. HSK is the official certificate in Mandarin Chinese by the Government of China. Thus university degree and diploma certificates do not matter beyond a point if one is unable to clear the HSK exam and is not able to communicate in Mandarin language.
At MeiYu we have developed our HSK level courses in such a way that after one year of studying you will be able to clear the HSK level 3 exam. Also after completion, we help our students apply for Scholarships in Taiwan and China so they are able to get the required exposure in Chinese speaking countries. Each class is 2 hours long and is interactive in nature. Instructors pay attention to each and every student and make sure that everyone gets a chance to actively participate in the class activities. There are weekday as well as weekend batches and most of our classes are conducted in the evening so that it’s convenient for most people.
